This whitepaper describes a new approach to application performance management (APM). Fundamental changes in the way that software is developed (e.g. agile methodologies, geographically distributed teams, and a growing reliance on third-party code) and the increasing complexity of application architectures (e.g. SOA, ESBs, heterogeneous, virtualized, and increasingly cloud-based) are rendering traditional APM approaches increasingly obsolete.

A new approach – continuous application performance management – that can be deployed across the entire application lifecycle – from development through test and into production – is required. This paper explores the requirements of this new approach and describes the impact it can have not only at each individual phase of an application’s lifecycle but also as an integrated, consistent approach to ensuring application performance across the lifecycle.
